How to Eat Your Way Out of Cancer

The fight against cancer continues. Although there is still no drug that can cure it, the best way to deal for now is prevention through diet. Numerous studies have been published supporting the reduction of your chances in developing cancer with simple and healthy tweaks in your diet. While there is no miracle food against cancer, researches purport that eating the right food combo makes a huge difference. A 'cancer-fighting' diet which you can keep for life is the key to eat your way out of cancer. Here's how you can do it:

1. Maintain a fiber-rich diet

A UK study has suggested that pre-menopausal women who eat large amounts of fiber (about 30 g per day) could have half of the cancer risk than women who eat less (about <20 g per day). When it comes to fiber, Americans only eat an average of 15 g of fiber in a day. That's a long way to go to reach an optimum fiber intake of 25-30 g a day. A high fiber intake also helps you maintain a healthy body weight, further reducing your risk in some types of cancer such as colon and kidney cancers.

Fiber up with whole grain products such as breads, cereals, pasta and brown rice. A bowl of oat bran every morning, as Dr. Chauchard of the Chrono-Geno-Nutrition Diet suggests will already provide 6 g fiber every day. You can also begin your meals with a raw starter of vegetables, and half of your plate should be composed of cooked vegetables. Then, end your meal with a piece of fruit.

2. Folate is your friend

The B-vitamin, folate, has a protective effect against breast, colon and rectal cancers. An adequate folate level in the body prevents the occurrence of DNA mutations in our cells.

You can get a lot of folate from whole grain products, dark green leafy vegetables like kale and spinach, fruits like oranges, strawberries and blueberries, liver, beans and eggs.

3. Tea

Tea, especially green tea, contains a lot of flavonoids which are known to have antioxidant effects. In some studies, green tea was observed to slow down or completely prevent the development of breast, prostate, liver and colon cancers.

Herbal tea infusion, like the Chauchard tea, also has anti-cancer benefits. Chauchard tea is composed of thyme, rosemary and star anise, which will help with proper digestion and elimination of retained water. The combination of 3 herbs is highly beneficial in body detoxification and weight loss. Thyme has rosmarinic and ursolic acids which are major terpenoids that possess anti-cancer properties.

4.Avoid grill marks

Acrylamides, which are a group of chemicals produced when you eat fried, grilled or roasted foods, seems to have a link to developing cancer, especially of the colon and ovaries. Studies have shown that people who are used to eating charred foods are more likely to be of risk. Cook your meat by braising, stewing or steaming instead.

5. Go easy on the alcohol

Drinking alcohol may potentially increase the risk of breast cancer, in association with the two genes that are involved in alcohol metabolism. But, the precise mechanisms for this phenomenon are still not clear. Although some studies have shown that alcohol, especially red and white wines, can have anti-oxidant effects. That is, as long as you limit your intake to 1 glass a day for women and at most 2 glasses for men.

Knowing these facts is a start, but without application, these will all be useless. Take a proactive step to change the way you eat, and ultimately change the way you live.
